Nobody Is Selling My Business
Some Guidance before completing. This course is designed as a "90 Day Sprint". The exercises are short and abrupt, so your answers need to be same. This is about action, not re-writing War and Peace. Address the points, agree the actions, and implement them... ideally today.

Module 04: Nobody Is Selling Your Business
Saying “my broker’s handling it” costs you nothing today. It hands the problem to someone else, quietly, without you ever having to check whether anything is actually happening. That’s exactly why it’s the fourth excuse every stuck seller reaches for: it feels like delegation, when it’s actually absence.
Here is the test. If your listing has been live for months with no active outreach you can point to, nobody is selling your business. It’s being advertised. Those are not the same thing. Advertising waits. Selling hunts. The businesses that complete from stuck positions are almost always the ones where the owner became the head of their own sale campaign, not a passenger in someone else’s.
None of this is about blaming your broker. It’s about recognising that nobody on this earth knows better than you who should own this business next, and that knowledge is worth nothing sitting in your head instead of on a page in front of the right person.
Most stuck listings are suffering from one of four specific problems, and most are suffering from more than one at once. Here they are, in full.
WHAT THIS MODULE DELIVERS
- A named list of ten buyers who should own this business next, across all five buyer categories.
- An honest read on whether your listing is being sold, or just advertised.
- A broker briefing that arms them to work your list, instead of waiting beside you.
THE FOUR SILENT LISTING PROBLEMS, IN FULL
The Passive Listing
A listing on a portal is not a sale process. It’s a lottery ticket sitting in a drawer, waiting for the right person to notice it among a hundred others, on a random day, if they happen to be looking then. Passive marketing works when there’s overwhelming genuine demand. Business sales rarely have that. The businesses that sell from stuck positions are hunted, not found.
Ask yourself: in the last three months, how many approaches to my business came from someone actively contacted, versus someone who simply found the listing?
The Sales Agent’s Incentive
A sales agent with a hundred listings completes on a handful a year. Your listing is one ticket in a drawer full of others, and their business model depends on volume, not depth. That’s not a character flaw, it’s simple economics: the fee per listing is small, so time invested per listing has to stay small too. Understanding this isn’t a reason to place blame. It’s a reason to stop waiting for someone to do something their own business model was never built to do.
Ask yourself: how many hours has anyone spent this month actively promoting my specific business to a specific buyer, as opposed to just leaving it listed?
No Named Buyers
Ask most stuck sellers who should buy their business, and they can’t answer. They’re waiting for a buyer to appear rather than identifying one and going to them. Every sector has a short list: the trade competitor who’s coveted your customer base for years, the supplier who wants your margin, the customer who wants your capability in-house, the consolidator bolting on businesses like yours, the individual with sector experience and funding looking for exactly this.
Ask yourself: could I name ten people or companies who should own this business next? If not, I don’t have a buyer problem. I have a buyer-finding problem.
The Silent Broker Relationship
A good broker will work a target list hard. But most sellers never hand them one. They assume “marketing it” is the whole job, and wait quietly for updates. A broker armed with named prospects, warm introductions, and a seller actively pushing leads back to them completes faster than one working a cold listing alone.
Ask yourself: has my broker ever seen a list of who I think should buy this business, or have I left that entirely to them?
HOW TO SCORE YOURSELF HONESTLY
- 1 Bad / unclear: a genuine problem, or you don’t know enough to say otherwise. Both are a red flag.
- 2 Below par: you can see the issue clearly. It isn’t fixed yet.
- 3 On track: solid enough. Not a blocker, but not something a buyer will notice either.
- 4 Good: this is genuinely working in your favour.
- 5 Awesome, well done: a real strength. A buyer would notice this positively.
WHO ACTUALLY BUYS BUSINESSES LIKE YOURS
Every sector has the same five buyer categories, and most sellers have only ever thought about one of them: whoever happens to enquire. The other four are usually closer to buying than any portal visitor will ever be.
- Trade competitor: Has coveted your customer base or market position for years; buying you removes a rival and adds scale in one move.
- Supplier: Wants your margin, or wants to secure a channel to market they currently only sell into.
- Customer: Wants your capability brought in-house, especially if they already depend on you.
- Consolidator: Professionally acquires businesses like yours as part of a buy-and-build strategy; has done this before and moves fast.
- Individual with sector experience and funding: Knows the industry, has the capital or backing, and is actively looking for exactly this kind of opportunity.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Passive: the listing sits on a portal for eight months. Forty-one views, six enquiries, no serious offers. Active: the seller and broker jointly identify twelve named buyers across the five categories, and approach each directly within three weeks. Two decline, three go quiet, four take an initial call, two request the IM, one makes an offer within six weeks. Same business, same broker, same price range. The only difference was who did the finding.
WHERE THE EVIDENCE ACTUALLY LIVES
- Your enquiry log: how many approaches were inbound from the portal versus outbound, from you or your broker actively reaching someone.
- A direct conversation with your broker: how many listings they currently have live, and how much time realistically goes to yours.
- Your own knowledge of the sector: the competitors, suppliers and customers who’d have an obvious reason to buy.
- Trade press, LinkedIn and industry bodies, for named consolidators active in your space right now.
NOBODY IS SELLING YOUR BUSINESS
Score your business honestly against all four listing problems, using the rubric from this module’s teaching. Then check what’s actually being done to sell it, not just advertise it.
